Craps Glossary of Bet Types

Buying Odds – The act of backing a bet up to purchase the right to be paid out correctly in the event of a win in craps.

Come Bets – A bet that pays if a 7 or eleven is rolled, and loses if the roll is two, three or twelve. If any other number is rolled, the bet moves or comes to the appropriate number. Then, the bet wins if the number occurs before a 7 is rolled.

C/E – C and E is thought of as an insurance bet. The c refers to craps and the e refers to eleven. When a player bets either the c, the e, or the c and e, they are taking insurance against the shooter rolling craps. This bet is typically placed on the coming out roll.

Don’t Pass Bets, Don’t Betting, Wrong Way Betting – The don’t pass bet is banking on the shooter throwing a 7 prior to hitting point. Players who bet the Don’t line are known as wrong way bettors, as they are betting with the house, and against the shooter (which is why this is viewed as wrong way betting).

Field Bets – This bet is a one-roll bet and you are betting on a single roll to be a either a two, 3, 4, nine, 10, 11 or twelve. If the roll is any of these numbers then you win. Field bets pay evenly, except for when two or twelve hits, at which time it pays double. The bet is lost upon occurrence of any other number.

Hard way Betting – Betting the hard way is the bet a craps player places on an even number that can be rolled in multiple ways. For example, a roll of two threes is considered a hard six. A roll of four and two or five and one is considered an easy six. Hard way betting occurs over the course of several rolls and expires when either the number is rolled (hard or easy way) or a 7 is rolled.

Hopping Bets – A hopping bet is a one-time bet. For example, a shooter can bet on a hopping hard four. If the roll immediately following the bet is a two and two, the bettor is paid. If anything other than two twos is rolled, the bet is a loser.

Horn Bet – The horn bet is a one-time roll on two, three, eleven and twelve. The amount of the bet is distributed evenly between each number.

Lay Bets – Lay bets are craps bets that a 7 occurs prior to the number in which the bet is behind.

Pass Line Bets – When a player bets the pass line, he is betting the shooter will hit point before rolling a 7 after the point is established. This is known as right way betting.

Place Bets – Place bets are made on a number that can be a point, such as 4, 5, six, eight, 9, or ten. Place bets pay if the selected number is rolled, yet loses if a 7 is rolled.
